Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a truly unique institution. It is the only international collaborative university in China with dual degree awarding powers, from the Chinese Ministry of Education and from the University of Liverpool. Founded in 2006 with an initial intake of just 164 students, the university has grown rapidly over the last five years. We now have nearly 6,000 students on campus with a further 1,600 studying at Liverpool under a 2+2 articulation agreement. The university is independent, but draws for guidance and experience upon its two parent universities, both of which are over one hundred years old and highly respected international pioneers.
After an initial foundation year which includes significant English language provision and training in the use of English for academic purposes, teaching and learning in the subsequent three years is all in the medium of English. We offer twenty-six undergraduate and ten masters degree programmes, which are validated by the University of Liverpool. The student learning and teaching experience is enhanced through internal and external moderation of standards, and a thorough quality assurance process is in operation.
XJTLU aims to be a research-led university, in keeping with the spirit of its parents, Xi’an Jiaotong University, one of the top ten universities in China and the University of Liverpool, a member of the Russell Group of research intensive universities in the UK. We have committed significant investment to supporting the development of the research careers in China of newly-appointed staff, through the funding of start-up research projects and of doctoral students. Staff regularly apply for and receive external funding from a range of sources.
As part of an ambitious expansion agenda, there is a large scale campus development programme providing world-class teaching facilities. We aim to have 10,000 students on campus by 2015/16.
The establishment of XJTLU Business School, with the appointment of Professor Sarah Dixon as the founding Dean, marks another hugely important milestone in the development of the university. We are committed to developing closer engagement with the international and local business community in our region and beyond. We aim to recruit leading professorial staff who can help us achieve this. Working at XJTLU is challenging and rewarding in equal measure. Our students are highly talented. We expect high standards from them and from our staff alike.
I believe that XJTLU is at the forefront in the internationalization of higher education. If you have the motivation and ability to contribute to this goal, I invite you to submit an application for consideration.
